Obsidian Integration: Turn Your Notes into Flashcards

Learn how to seamlessly convert your Obsidian notes into spaced repetition flashcards with Space's powerful plugin integration.

Space Team

If you’re an Obsidian user, you know the frustration: your notes are beautifully organized in your vault, but when it comes to actually memorizing that knowledge, you’re stuck switching between apps, manually copying content, or worse—letting valuable insights fade from memory.

Space changes that. Our Obsidian plugin bridges the gap between note-taking and long-term learning, letting you create flashcards directly within your familiar markdown environment.

The Problem with Separate Tools

Most knowledge workers face the same challenge: information capture and information retention are treated as two separate workflows. You take notes in one app, create flashcards in another, and constantly battle to keep them in sync.

This fragmented approach leads to:

  • Duplication of effort — writing the same content twice
  • Outdated flashcards — forgetting to update cards when notes change
  • Lost context — flashcards disconnected from your broader knowledge base
  • Workflow friction — switching apps breaks your focus

How Space’s Obsidian Plugin Works

If you’ve used Obsidian_to_Anki before, you’ll feel right at home—Space uses a similar Q:A syntax. The difference: modern UI, instant deck sharing, and automatic cloud sync across all devices.

Our plugin uses a simple, intuitive syntax that feels natural within your markdown notes. No complicated setup, no proprietary formats—just clean, readable text that doubles as powerful flashcards.

Q:A Syntax for Flashcards

Creating a flashcard is as simple as writing a question and answer:

Q: What is spaced repetition?
A: A learning technique that involves reviewing information at
increasing intervals to optimize long-term retention.

Pro Tip

You can write multi-line answers by continuing on the next lines after A:. The plugin intelligently handles formatting.

TARGET DECK Directive

Organize your flashcards into decks using the TARGET DECK directive:

TARGET DECK: Biology

Q: What is the powerhouse of the cell?
A: The mitochondria, which produces ATP through cellular respiration.

Q: What is the function of the cell membrane?
A: To regulate what enters and exits the cell,
   providing a selective barrier.
🚀

Smart Organization

All flashcards below a TARGET DECK directive will be added to that deck. You can have multiple TARGET DECK directives in a single note to organize cards into different decks.

One-Click Synchronization

Once you’ve written your flashcards in Obsidian, syncing them to Space is instant:

  1. Open the command palette (Cmd/Ctrl + P)
  2. Run “Space: Sync flashcards”
  3. Done! Your cards appear in Space, ready for review

The plugin intelligently:

  • Creates new cards for new Q:A blocks
  • Updates existing cards when you modify content
  • Preserves your review history and scheduling data
  • Handles deletions gracefully
💡

Your Progress is Safe

Sync flows from Obsidian to Space. When you edit a card in Obsidian, Space keeps your review history intact—updating content won’t reset your learning progress.
